Practicum Opportunities

Our teaching and learning activities are diversified, ranging from interactive lectures, e-learning and flipped classroom, group projects and discussions, as well as personal reflections. The range of learning modes reflects our determination to keep our pedagogical approaches up-to-date, evidence-based, and learner-centred. Our undergraduate curriculum encompasses training of students’ conceptual knowledge, procedural skills, and attitudinal growth. The senior-year students will have a choice between completing a research thesis, conducing an application-oriented capstone project, or attending practicums inside or outside of campus. Below is a list of external organisations that offer practicum opportunities for our students:

Student Sharing: Practicum

I had my practicum at Oasis, an organization that aims to enhance the mental well-being of staff in the Hospital Authority. I was mainly involved in literature reviews and preparing materials for transdiagnostic-related group interventions based on the Unified Protocol (UP) and positive workplace communication talks. During the experience, I learnt the needs of healthcare workers and how to deliver psychoeducation in a down-to-earth manner. Hence, I realized that being empathetic is essential for a mental health professional.

Being an intern of the practitioner-wellbeing officer, I stepped out of my comfort zone and met people from different walks of life. I had the hands-on experience of being in touch with the clients during the placement. I learnt that each client is their story profession and learnt to appreciate their survival mode and perseverance. The placement also allowed me to reflect on myself and helped me grow from inner characteristics, like bravery, to interacting with others.

During my Practicum in Guided Self-help at the New Life Psychiatric Rehabilitation Association eGPS service, I had the opportunity to shadow a psychological well-being officer. I observed therapy sessions, case management supervision, and psychoeducation groups. Additionally, I delivered individual guided self-help intervention under supervision of clinical psychologist, allowing me to apply classroom knowledge and skills from role-play practices to real therapy sessions. This experience provided valuable insights into my strengths and weaknesses as a therapist, fostering personal reflection and professional growth.

“The more you think, the more you gain.” This had been my major inspirations from my undergrad study. The programme, and my practicum experience of working with children with special education needs, had encouraged me to think out of the box, and make every endeavour to gain enlightening insights. Apart from the traditional pedagogical approach, I have learnt to appreciate the beauty of play, to learn and teach by utilising toys such as Lego and board games. These rewarding experiences have further reinforced my aspirations - to cultivate a motivating environment for the next generation.

During my practicum in low-intensity psychological interventions, I had the invaluable opportunity of exploring various evidence-based strategies and ethical considerations associated with this field. This experience not only allowed me to engage with clients from diverse backgrounds but also provided valuable insights into the importance of tailoring interventions to meet each client's specific needs. Regular biweekly clinical supervision sessions with Prof. So and an emphasis on self-reflection have significantly deepened my understanding of the profound impact of human connection and my role as a helping professional. Beyond the development of clinical skills, this practicum has been a transformative journey of self-exploration.

Throughout my practicum, I had the privilege of immersing myself in a multitude of practical experiences, acquiring invaluable skills in classroom management and designing creative teaching activities. I eagerly seized the opportunity to organize a mini project centered around emotional regulation and expression for a select group of preschoolers. This profound experience served as a reminder of the weighty responsibilities and profound impact educators possess, ultimately solidifying my career aspiration to serve and support the well-being of children.

I had my practicum at ECF Saint Too Canaan College in 2022-23 term 1. In the three months, I held after-school tutorial sessions, provided psychology workshops for senior students, and conducted ensemble training for students with a passion for music.

The practicum course allowed me to apply psychology concepts to real-life settings. It also provided me with insights into workplace cultures and how to work with different colleagues. Overall, it was a fruitful and meaningful experience.
